>> catherine: now at five -- the bay area is bracing for icy temperatures. you're looking at snow on mount hamilton in the south bay that fell overnight. people have been driving up to the lick observatory to see it. freeze warnings are set to take effect in a matter of hours. here's a live look at conditions in plesanton where it's expected to dip into the twenties. and - the view from our mt. tam camera in the north bay. good evening, i'm catherine heenan. i'm here in the weather center with jacqueline. she's been tracking this cold weather. >> jacqueline: on it is going to be at a cold. if you've been outside already it is already in the 40's with the wind gusting making it feel even colder. upper 40's and/low 50s right now. 48 novato 49 in pleasanton we are still seeing some gusting winds up 28 m.p.h. at half moon bay. 18 mph in santa rosa. these wind gusts are making it feel much colder but the wind has to

die down, overnight for the temperatures to really drop off. it looks like the well. widespread 20' the north bay, 2n concord, pleasanton, livermore. and in the south bay, concord, 30's through oakland. 34 degrees in half moon bay. frost advisories have been issued. we will talk about more how that will last coming up. >> catherine: one doctor we talked to says the cold weather makes it easier for the flu to spread. tonight - the first reports of flu deaths in california this year.. we'll have a look at the outbreak spreading across the country -- later in the newscast. >> but first - we're following developing news out of central california. a student walks into a school classroom in kern county.and shoots at two students.critically injuring one.and missing the other. it happened this morning at taft union high school.which is about 35 miles south-west of

bakersfield. just off interstate 5. this is a very rural town.the school actually has an armed guard.but the guard was not at the school today because he was snowed in. the 16-year old shooting suspect also hit a teacher in the head with a pellet from the 12-guague shotgun he used. that teacher was not seriously injured.and along with a campus counselor the teacher helped convince the shooter to put the gun down. tonight the shooter is in polce custody. right after the shooting, terrified parents rushed to the school.you can see how upset come appear. one mother says her daughter was huddled in a closet.called 9-11, then called her mom. >> i could not even understand her when she was trying to talk to me she said just to get here because there is blood everywhere. she was hysterical. >> reporter: some parents

and studets say the shooter targeted the two students at which he shot. they also say the shooter had a hit list last year.of people he wanted to kill.and was expelled from the school. but he was apparently allowed back in this year. we'll comtinue following-- continue.. that story.and this comes on the same day that vice president joe biden met with a national rifle association official to discuss ways to reduce gun violence in america. what major gun change is most likely.at 5:30. >> catherine: a developing story tonight. the search for victims of the speed freak killers -- wesley shermantine and loren herzog. they carried out a drug- fueled killing spree in the 80's and 90's. shermantine has led authorities to what he says are the burial sites of victims. last year - the remains of at least 3 people were found in an abandoned well. now the f.b.i has taken over and they're searching a new well. kron-4's j-r stone is here with the story.

the this is a link to wesleyan shermantine.. with a major setback the bottom of the well has been reached. at 200 ft. below the surface that is where they have not found any human remains. with to wondered feet deep is a huge blow to the fbi. 2 1/3 feet deep, they thought that this was only 50 ft. deep. now, they've already gone 200 ft. deep. there is now, water at the bottom of the wealth that has to be drained. to trade that, that-water at the bottom. but more drain efforts is going to even be more expensive. but it is likely going to go up with this well is four times deeper than they are rigidly in thought. once they clear that out they can see what

bridge tower. the support beams compromised and you can see the cargo ship is scraped with that piece of fender. officials say that the fender on the tower did exactly what was supposed to do. the bridge is is structurally sound and the drivers for never in any danger. >> we are getting a first look of the man that was dousing his girlfriend with gasoline and setting her on fire. fire. 22-year-old dexter oliver didn't say much in a san francisco courtroom today. other than indicating he doesn't have the money for an attorney. he's been charged with 11 felonies including attempted murder, assault and torture. he's accused of filling two bottles with gasoline - and throwing it on his girlfriend after a fight over clothes at a laundromat. bail has been set for 10 million dollars. >> a convicted sex ofender and murderer has turned himself into vallejo police for

the murder of his 90-year- old mother. investigators say that on wednesday - 70-year-old dennis stanworth called 911 claiming to have killed his mothernellie stanworth police arrived at his home on marshfield road. and found the woman's body - and arrested her son.it's not clear yet exactly when the woman died. but two of her friends say dennis told them she died weeks ago >> he was going in his house and i just yelled and i said howl is nellie? because i thought that she was okay. and i yelled how is millie and he said that she passed away last week. and she had a military burial that is all that he said. and that makes me sick. my wife cannot get over it is very upset. we both are, really. she was really nice to us. we had good relationships with her shores really nice,
